Why Plan Chattanooga Weekend Getaway?
Chattanooga has been earning a lot of praise from some of the top travel magazines. Many travel experts are now recommending Chattanooga for a weekend getaway. Here are just a few of the recent awards Tennessee’s Scenic City has received.
I’ve been visiting Chattanooga for almost 50 years. (Wow, it feels strange to say that. I don’t feel that old!) When I was a kid, my parents would pack a bag of coloring books and toys to keep me busy while they bid on antiques at the Northgate Gallery Auction. (Most of those antiques are still in their house today.) This lively little town has grown and changed so much since then. Today, it’s a perfect place to visit when we need a weekend getaway.
There’s so much to see and do in and around Chattanooga that it’s impossible to do everything in just one weekend. So, we’ve picked out our top attractions and broken them down by Downtown, Outdoor Adventures, and Arts. After that, we’ll share our favorite restaurants and hotel recommendations.
So, grab a pen (or your phone) and get ready to add a lot of ideas to your Chattanooga itinerary!

DOWNTOWN CHATTANOOGA ATTRACTIONS FOR A WEEKEND GETAWAY
Downtown Chattanooga is a very walkable town, especially if you are staying in the historic district. With the electric shuttle and bike rentals available, you can park your car for the weekend to explore. Here are the places we recommend for your first Chattanooga weekend getaway.

Tennessee Aquarium
Forget thinking that aquariums are just for families with kids. The Tennessee Aquarium is actually a great place for couples, too. Imagine walking hand-in-hand through dark rooms, watching jellyfish glow like art or gazing at the huge ocean tank with sharks swimming above. We’re from Atlanta (which has the biggest aquarium in the U.S.), and we’ve planned several Chattanooga weekend trips just to visit the Tennessee Aquarium. We’ve gone with our kids and also just the two of us. Pro tip for couples: Go in the early evening after kids have left for dinner. It’s quieter and more peaceful.

Tennessee Aquarium Address: 1 Broad Street, Chattanooga TN 37402
Chattanooga Choo Choo
The original train station, which opened in 1909, is now the heart of Chattanooga’s lively historic district. Here, you’ll find places to eat, shop, a comedy club, and even a hotel where you can sleep in a vintage train car (we’ll tell you more about that later). If you’re staying in the historic district, you’ll likely come here a lot. We suggest checking out Frothy Monkey, Stir, and Elsie’s Daughter for great food. Don’t forget to visit the little gift shop for a souvenir or an ornament to remember your Chattanooga weekend getaway!

Chattanooga Choo Choo Address: 1400 Market St, Chattanooga TN 37402
Walnut Street Walking Bridge and Riverwalk
The Walnut Street Bridge is one of the longest pedestrian bridges in the world. This long blue bridge connects downtown Chattanooga with the North Shore. It’s a favorite spot for walking, biking, and enjoying beautiful views of the Tennessee River. Be sure to take a walk on the bridge during sunrise or sunset—they both offer amazing views of the river!

Walnut Street Walking Bridge Address: 1 Walnut St, Chattanooga TN 37403
Hunter Museum of American Art
The Hunter Museum of American Art features a wide range of art, from colonial times to today. Perched on a bluff above the Tennessee River, the building mixes old and modern architecture. Inside, you’ll find works by famous American artists and rotating exhibits. If you’re not in the mood for a full museum visit, you can still enjoy the outdoor sculptures and get a little culture boost.

Hunter Museum of American Art Address: 10 Bluff View Ave, Chattanooga TN 37403
Chattanooga Whiskey
If you love bourbon, the Chattanooga Whiskey Experimental Distillery is a must-visit. It’s a small spot located right across from the Chattanooga Choo Choo and was recently listed as one of Mashed’s 20 Distilleries Every Whiskey Lover Must Visit Before They Die. You can take a tour and try their unique creations, which change all the time. Past flavors have included peach, citrus, and even persimmon. If flavored whiskey isn’t your style, their straight bourbons are fantastic. We always stop by to stock up for our home bar on every visit.

OUTDOOR ADVENTURES FOR A CHATTANOOGA WEEKEND GETAWAY
Chattanooga is known for its outdoor activities and natural wonders. From breathtaking views at iconic landmarks to miles of hiking trails, there is so much to do for nature lovers.
Rock City Gardens
As you drive through the South, you’ll spot the iconic red barns with “See Rock City” painted on their roofs. They are all pointing to Rock City Gardens, just over the state line in Georgia. Only a 10-minute drive from Chattanooga, Rock City Gardens is a must-see, especially if it’s your first visit to Chattanooga. You’ll find amazing rock formations and stunning panoramic views. It’s more of a scenic walk than a hike, with four easy trails you can explore in one visit. Don’t forget to check out Fat Man’s Squeeze—a tight passage that makes for fun photo ops.
The highlight is the “See Seven States” viewpoint at the top of Lookout Mountain. On clear days, they say you can see seven states, though some debate that claim. Either way, the view is breathtaking. With seasonal events throughout the year, Rock City Gardens is a destination worth visiting anytime.

Rock City Gardens Address: 1400 Patten Rd, Lookout Mountain, GA 30750
Ruby Falls
Ruby Falls is a breathtaking underground waterfall beneath Lookout Mountain. Discovered in 1928, it’s the deepest underground waterfall in the U.S. that you can visit. To reach it, you’ll take a glass-front elevator deep below the surface, where a guided tour leads you through incredible formations of stalactites and stalagmites. The highlight is the grand finale: a 145-foot illuminated waterfall.
For a more personal experience, Ruby Falls offers special tours like the After Hours Lantern Tour or Valentine’s Day tours. Since many of these tours are adults-only, they’re perfect for a romantic Chattanooga getaway. Check their website for special events happening during your visit. If you’re feeling adventurous, head above ground to try the zip line for a view from above.

Ruby Falls Address: 1720 S. Scenic Hwy. Chattanooga, TN 37409
Incline Railway
The Incline Railway is one of Chattanooga’s most iconic attractions. Known as “America’s Most Amazing Mile,” the railway climbs a 73% grade up Lookout Mountain. You can’t beat the gorgeous views of Chattanooga and the surrounding area. The railway itself has been in operation since 1895 and it is a National Historic Site. You’ll find several shops, restaurants, and even a microbrewery at the base. At the top, you can explore historical attractions like Point Park and enjoy the fantastic views from the highest point on Lookout Mountain.

Incline Railway Address: 3917 St Elmo Ave, Chattanooga, TN 37409
Point Park
Point Park, located on Lookout Mountain, is part of the Chickamauga and Chattanooga National Military Park. You can get there by riding the Incline Railway or by driving, but parking at the top is limited, so we suggest taking the Incline Railway. The park honors the “Battle Above the Clouds” from the Civil War. It’s a great place to visit if you like history and amazing views. There is a $10 entrance fee.

Point Park Address: 110 Point Park Rd, Lookout Mountain, TN 37350
Coolidge Park
Coolidge Park is a vibrant park along the North Shore of the Tennessee River. The antique carousel is a central highlight. The park is very kid friendly with play areas and water fountains. But, you can also find some quiet along the scenic walking paths with views of the river and nearby Walnut Street Bridge. Coolidge Park is not dog friendly, however. Events and performances are held in the park throughout the year.

Coolidge Park Address: 150 River St, Chattanooga, TN 37405
Sculpture Fields at Montague Park
This 33-acre outdoor art gallery is a place that many visitors miss in Chattanooga, but we think you should check it out. The park is in an industrial area and has a 1.5-mile walking trail that goes around more than 50 large art sculptures. Locals use it for activities like yoga, picnic lunches, engagement photo shoots, and sunset walks. Pro tip: Visit during golden hour, when the sculptures cast amazing shadows, perfect for taking photos!

Sculpture Fields at Montague Park Address: 1800 Polk St, Chattanooga, TN 37405
Cloudland Canyon State Park
Cloudland Canyon State Park is also in Georgia, not far from Chattanooga, and it’s a great place to escape the city and enjoy nature. The park is known for its beautiful canyons and waterfalls, making it perfect for hiking and camping. There are trails for all skill levels, so whether you’re a casual walker or an experienced hiker, you’ll find a trail that’s just right for you.

Cloudland Canyon State Park Address: 122 Cloudland Canyon Park Rd, Rising Fawn, GA 30738
ARTS & CULTURE FOR A CHATTANOOGA WEEKEND GETAWAY
Chattanooga has a lively arts and culture scene, making it a great place for a weekend getaway. Some must-see spots include the beautiful Bluff View Art District, the historic Tivoli Theatre, and many fun events and festivals that show off local talent and creativity.
Bluff View Art District
Chattanooga’s Bluff View Art District is a special neighborhood that sits high above the Tennessee River. You’ll find art galleries, cool sculptures, and cafes that feel more like art studios than regular restaurants. If you want to see the creative side of Chattanooga, this place is a must-visit.
Pro tip: Start at the River Gallery Sculpture Garden, where over 30 outdoor sculptures turn the beautiful landscape into a fun art experience. Grab a locally roasted coffee from Rembrandt’s and take a walk along the pathways. It will feel like you’ve discovered one of Chattanooga’s best-kept secrets. For lunch, try Tony’s Pasta, a local favorite for homemade pasta and sauces. Parking can be tough during busy times, so it’s a good idea to arrive early or be ready to find a spot in tight spaces.

Bluff View Art District Address: 411 E 2nd St, Chattanooga, TN 37403
Tivoli Theatre and Live Music
Chattanooga’s Tivoli Theatre is a historic gem in the heart of downtown. Built in 1921, this beautiful building is a hub for performing arts, hosting everything from Broadway shows to local symphonies. It has a cozy atmosphere where every seat feels great. We’ve even chosen to see a Broadway show here instead of in Atlanta, because we can enjoy the whole weekend in Chattanooga.
Pro tip: Arrive early to check out the theatre’s amazing architecture, with its gold leaf details and crystal chandeliers. The building itself is a work of art. Parking can be tricky during evening shows, so consider using nearby public lots or rideshare services.

Tivoli Theatre Address: 709 Broad St, Chattanooga, TN 37402
Special Events and Festivals
Chattanooga has a fun festival scene with something for everyone all year long. From the Riverbend Festival in June, where the Tennessee Riverfront turns into a huge music party, to the Lookout Wild Film Festival that shows outdoor and adventure movies, these events are more than just fun—they show what makes Chattanooga special.
The Wine Over Water event on the Walnut Street Bridge is all about enjoying good wine and local culture, while the Enchanted Garden of Lights at Rock City brings a magical winter experience just outside the city.
If you want to feel the heart of Chattanooga’s community, these festivals are a great way to do it!

LUXURY & BOUTIQUE HOTELS
The Edwin Hotel
The Edwin Hotel is a really cool art hotel by the Tennessee River. It’s part of the Marriott Autograph Collection and offers special things like fancy dining and a full-service spa, making it great for a romantic trip. During one of our weekend visits, we upgraded to a top-floor room with a view of the Bluff View Arts District. The best part? We got a bourbon cocktail kit in our room when we arrived. It was a nice surprise, especially since we were traveling with our dog and he couldn’t join us at the rooftop bar, Whiskey Thief. But he was welcome to hang out with us on the patio at Whitebird for dinner, which was fantastic.

Hotel Chalet at the Chattanooga Choo Choo
Hotel Chalet at the Chattanooga Choo Choo is another of our favorite boutique hotels in Chattanooga. This iconic hotel is located in the old train station and recently had a $19 million face lift. The decor is retro cool with loads of historic charm. The hotel has a combination of standard rooms and large suites. But, when you are staying in the shadow of the Chattanooga Choo Choo sign, we highly recommend staying in one of the vintage train cars that has been converted into a private room with speakeasy vibes. This is a perfect location is you want to explore downtown. The Chattanooga Choo Choo complex is packed with restaurants, bars, and shopping so you won’t even need to move your car.

WHERE TO EAT & DRINK ON A CHATTANOOGA WEEKEND GETAWAY
Chattanooga’s food scene has been growing for a few years, and in 2024, Conde Nast Traveler named it one of the Best Food Cities in the US. There are so many great places to eat! We’ve put together a list of our favorite spots that we recommend for your first Chattanooga weekend getaway.

CHATTANOOGA BREAKFAST & BRUNCH SPOTS
Brunch is basically a requirement when spending a weekend in Chattanooga. Sipping mimosas or bloody marys while indulging in eggs benedict overlooking the riverfront is one of my favorite ways to spend a casual Saturday morning.
Maple Street Biscuit Company
We discovered Maple Street Biscuit Co a few years ago when we took our kids to the Tennessee Aquarium for a Chattanooga weekend getaway, and it’s still one of our favorite spots for breakfast and brunch. The restaurant is known for its comfort food with a Southern twist, like giant biscuits and retro favorites such as fried green tomatoes. My pick is the Squawking Goat, which was featured on Food Network’s Guilty Pleasures. It’s a fried chicken breast topped with goat cheese and pepper jelly on one of their signature biscuits. So. Stinking. Good. Fun fact: When you order, they’ll ask you a fun question like “What’s your favorite game?” or “What should you be famous for?” Be careful what you answer, because that’s what they’ll call out when your food is ready.
Maple Street Biscuit Company Address: 407 Broad St, Chattanooga, TN 37402
Aretha Frankensteins
Don’t miss Aretha Frankenstein’s – it’s one of the coolest breakfast and brunch spots we’ve ever been to. Located in a neighborhood on the North Shore, this place is known for its unique decor and amazingly delicious pancake stacks. Get there early! The kitchen is small, and the wait can be long. We arrived just five minutes after they opened and still had to wait 30 minutes. But, it was totally worth it.

Aretha Frankensteins Address: 518 Tremont St, Chattanooga, TN 37405
CHATTANOOGA LUNCH & DINNER SPOTS
Main Street Meats
Main Street Meats in Chattanooga’s Southside is a unique mix of a neighborhood butcher shop, bar, and farm-to-table restaurant. The menu changes daily based on what’s fresh and available, and the restaurant is known for using locally sourced ingredients and whole-animal butchery. You can enjoy everything from perfectly made steaks and sausages to a tasty local beef burger, served with house-made tallow-cooked fries. We personally recommend the Local Beef Burger and the Smoked Turkey Sandwich – both were amazing!

Main Street Meats Address: 217 E Main St, Chattanooga, TN 37408
STIR
STIR, located in the historic Chattanooga Choo Choo complex was the top restaurant on our list for our last Chattanooga weekend getaway. It is famous for its craft cocktails and fresh seafood. We chose STIR for the oysters and cocktails, and we were definitely not disappointed. The cocktails were amazing, and I especially loved the Lobster & Shrimp White Mac & Cheese. The kitchen uses local ingredients to create a variety of dishes, from charbroiled oysters to unique items like cheeseburger egg rolls. With its signature raw bar and artisanal ice program, STIR makes for a great place for lunch, dinner, and weekend brunch.

Inspired by the local producers and artisans of the Tennessee River Valley, the restaurant focuses on fresh, regional ingredients that highlight Southern hospitality.
