I have a thing for bookstores, particularly independent bookstores. So, we seek them out in every town. Maybe it’s because books are the easiest way to travel the world (even when you aren’t traveling).

Maybe it’s the smell of coffee, books, and paper mixed with the feel of a hardback spine being cracked opened for the first time. Or, maybe it’s a holdover from my obsession with Meg Ryan’s adorable children’s book shop in “You’ve Got Mail”.

Regardless of what fuels my love affair with independent bookstores, M. Judson Booksellers in downtown Greenville, South Carolina is one of my favorites. So, what makes M. Judson Special?

Even the Building Has a Story

M. Judson Booksellers is housed in the old Greenville County Courthouse, a Beaux Arts building from 1918 with high ceilings, tall windows, and original architectural details. It served as a courthouse until the early ’90s.

The shop’s namesake, Mary Camilla Judson was the first Lady Principal at the Female College of Greenville in the mid-1800s. She taught physical exercise and debate at a time when neither was considered appropriate for women. (I love her so much for that.)

A woman-owned bookstore named after a woman who refused to color inside the lines? Of course it is.

They Read Everything. Then They Tell You What’s Worth It.

The selection covers all the usual bases like new releases, bestsellers, and classics. But the staff picks are what set M. Judson apart.

They’ve introduced me to Southern voices, local authors, and other books I wouldn’t have found on my own. These are people who actually read what they sell. Every single thing on that recommendation shelf got there because a real person read it and stood behind it.

Don’t be shy about asking for a recommendation in person either. Some of my favorite reads have come from a conversation at M. Judson. Just don’t be surprised if you walk out with three books you didn’t plan on buying. It’s happened to me more than once.

Camilla Kitchen Is Reason Enough

Camilla Kitchen does not serve the same sad scones you’ve come to expect from bookstore cafés. In addition to a full line of pastries, the cafe serves coffee drinks, teas, wines, beers, and ciders. At 4pm the Golden Hour menu kicks in with savory options that pair really well with a glass of something.

The Salted Rosemary Shortbread is worth the trip on its own. Get it with coffee in the morning or wine in the afternoon. I don’t know how, but it pairs perfectly with both.

The Event Calendar Is Worth Checking

M. Judson runs a full calendar of literary events and they’re not your standard author-behind-a-table situations.

I’m talking silent reading parties, live storytelling nights, after-hours dinner parties, cocktails with authors, and book clubs that actually sound fun.
