Hotel Emma Review: Is San Antonio’s Splurge Worth It?

Hotel Emma might just be one of the most unique places we’ve ever stayed. Housed in a beautifully restored brewery, this five-star property blends upscale comfort with rich Texas history in the most unexpected way. With a pair of Michelin Keys and a long list of standout amenities, it’s not a budget stay. But is it worth the splurge? Let’s break it down.

Why Hotel Emma?

We celebrated our 10th anniversary with a few long weekend getaways, thanks to the Southwest Companion Pass. For this trip, we cashed in some points and used the pass to snag two roundtrip flights to San Antonio for just $60 total. Not a bad way to kick things off.

Once the flights were booked, I started searching for hotels. There are plenty of great options along the Downtown Riverwalk, close to the Alamo and the nightlife. But we wanted something a little more quiet.

When I found Hotel Emma, I was hooked. Between the history, the architecture, the reputation for impeccable service, and the location in the Pearl District, it checked every box.

Where is Hotel Emma?

Hotel Emma is technically still on the Riverwalk, but it’s in the quieter Museum Reach section just north of downtown. It’s right in the middle of the Pearl District, a walkable neighborhood packed with some of San Antonio’s best restaurants, shops, and bars. And that meant we could skip the cost of a rental car. Win!

First Impressions Started Before Check In

Hotel Emma impressed me before we even set foot on the property. About two weeks before our stay, the concierge called to personally welcome us and offer help planning our visit.

They also followed up with an email full of details including amenities, dining options, local events, and specialty experiences we could book ahead of time. I’ve never had a hotel actually call us before a trip, and honestly, it set our expectations pretty high.

Since this trip was part of our 10th anniversary celebration, I considered having the hotel’s Anniversary Special delivered to our room. I ended up holding off (which turned out to be a good call but more on that later).

Instead, I booked us a spot on the free Hotel Emma History Tour. Yes, it’s a tour but I’m a sucker for a good story. And the Pearl Brewery has one hell of a story.

The Crazy History of the Hotel Emma

Take a guy named Otto, add a brewery, three different women named Emma, a tragic accident, a dash of scandalous infidelity (okay, more than a dash), prohibition, and a murder and you’ve got the makings of Hotel Emma’s wild backstory.

I won’t spoil the whole thing here in case you decide to take the history tour yourself, but let’s just say it’s a good story.

Check In Experience

Since our flight got in at almost midnight, we stayed at a hotel near the airport for the first night. I couldn’t justify spending a premium for Hotel Emma when we’d be too exhausted to enjoy it. And, I am so glad we did.

The next morning, we took an Uber to Hotel Emma around 9am which was well before the 4pm check in time. We planned to drop our bags at the front desk and explore The Pearl.

The staff couldn’t have been more welcoming. The front desk attendant let us know a Landmark room was available right away for a small upgrade fee. That was an easy yes.

Not quite as thrilling as a surprise free upgrade, but maybe we were just eager to settle in. Or maybe it was one of those “in for a penny, in for a pound” moments. We’d already splurged on the weekend, so what was a little more? (At least, that’s how we justified it.) Either way, we went for it.

Guests are typically welcomed with Hotel Emma’s signature La Babia margarita which we would’ve gladly accepted if we weren’t checking in at 9 a.m. Instead, we were given two wooden tokens to redeem our drinks later.

The front desk also offered us a quick tour of the lobby and shared some of the hotel’s fascinating history, pointing out original pieces of brewery equipment that have been reimagined into lighting and decor.

Interior & Decor

Speaking of decor – this is where Hotel Emma really shines (at least for this lover of all things design)

They say God is in the details and Hotel Emma proves it. Everywhere you look, there’s a subtle (or not-so-subtle) nod to the building’s brewery roots. Exposed brick, steel beams, vintage brewing equipment—it’s all still there.

The industrial elements are balanced with warm leather furniture, antique rugs, and soft lighting that make the whole space feel inviting instead of stark.

Hotel Emma has 146 rooms, including a handful of suites, so it’s not small. But it still feels like a boutique hotel. So, its intimate enough to feel special, but big enough to offer all the perks you’d expect from a five-star stay.

Throughout the hotel are seating areas where you can sit and relax, read, or sip a cocktail. They managed to make this huge, industrial space feel so cozy.

Rooms

We couldn’t wait to see our room, so we headed upstairs as soon as our lobby tour was finished. Historical details are carried through the hallways. The carpets are designed after the original tiles from the Brewmeisters Office, and the artwork is a replica of a piece found during the renovation.

In the time that we were taking our casual tour of the hotel lobby, Guest Services had an anniversary gift delivered to our room. Along with a sweet handwritten note and some delicious chocolates, they included a sample of one of Hotel Emma’s signature scents. This is the scent they pump throughout the hotel. Its very subtle, but smells so good!

This was hands-down one of our favorite hotel rooms we’ve ever stayed in. It had so much character. Definitely nothing cookie-cutter or corporate about it. We’re talking a big, bold four poster bed covered in soft white Frette linens, polished concrete floors, and warm wood furniture. The brick exterior wall, exposed column, and soaring ceilings (that had to be 14 feet high) really throw back to that industrial vibe.

And the bed was honestly one of the most comfortable I’ve ever slept in!

The leather sofa nook by the window was one of our favorite spots. It came with a lamp and two small tables, and it was so comfortable that Jason actually took a nap there one afternoon while I was catching up on work. It was also the perfect spot for coffee in the morning and cocktails at night.

The in-room guide was so creatively designed and had all the information we could possibly need for our stay. The leather bound book was a very classy touch.

Hotel Emma doesn’t believe in mini-bars. Instead, they provide an Ice Box and In Room Pantry that live inside a pretty armoire. Both are stocked with local favorites, plus all the ingredients you need to recreate their signature La Babia margarita. I loved the glass bottles of local artesian water.

The waters were replenished nightly during turndown service, along with delicious macarons.

The huge closet had plenty of room for all our hanging clothes (plus a lot more). And these guayabera robes by Dos Carolinas robes were so nice. They were the perfect lightweight fabric for South Texas heat. I couldn’t justify the $315 price tag for a robe so I found a dupe on Amazon and immediately added it to my cart.

One thing noticeably missing from the room? A coffee maker. But, we didn’t miss it. Each morning, we called down when we were ready, and a complimentary coffee service was delivered straight to our door complete with cream, mugs, and even sugar-in-the-raw for Jason. It was so much better (and more luxurious) than fiddling with those pre-packaged filter packs most hotels offer.

And I’m sorry but can we take a minute to talk about this bathroom?

Stunning. Truly. Sadly, the photos don’t come close to doing it justice.

It was absolutely gorgeous— handmade Spanish tiles and Frette towels, accented with warm brass accents, and vintage details. Ours had a separate water closet, single porcelain vanity and huge shower.

Larger rooms include two vanities and a luxurious clawfoot tub. Also, the Los Poblanos lavender bath products smelled absolutely amazing.

Hotel Emma Property & Amenities

Rooftop Pool

The rooftop pool, tucked away on the third-floor terrace, was the perfect spot for a quiet, relaxing afternoon. It wasn’t crowded at all. Though to be fair, we were in town during San Antonio’s Fiesta, so most of the action was happening downtown.

You can grab cocktails and small bites poolside from Provisions, the bar housed in a converted Pearl Brewery delivery truck that is now a permanent food truck.

The brewery may not make beer anymore, but it still produces Pearl Water from the local springs. The cocktails were really good!

The Library

My favorite place to wind down at the end of the day was The Library. It’s a real library with 3,700 books you can actually check out during your stay, including original chemistry books from the old brewery.

But in the evening, it transforms into my dream spot with a bartender set up to serve signature cocktails. Since it’s only open to hotel guests, it stays quiet and peaceful, making it the perfect spot to end the night.

Hiatus Spa

Hotel Emma doesn’t have its own spa, but Hiatus Spa is right next door and the concierge can easily set up appointments for you.

Curio

This adorable shop carries locally made and handcrafted goods, plus plenty of Hotel Emma merch. I couldn’t resist a gorgeous WP Standard leather tote. It will be perfect for work and you know how I love a practical souvenir. And, of course, we picked up an ornament for our travel tree.

Chef’s Tasting in The Library

Don’t miss the complimentary tasting in The Library on Friday afternoons. It’s a fun way to kick off the weekend and you can reserve your spot in advance on the hotel’s website.

Hotel Emma History Tour

I’ve already mentioned the history tour and while it might not be everyone’s thing, I do recommend it. We got access to a few areas that were otherwise closed off for a weekend event, so it ended up being totally worth it.

Events at Sternewirth

From weekly live music to Van Winkle tastings to Kentucky Derby parties, there’s always something going on at Sternewirth. The Derby party ended up being one of the highlights of our whole weekend!

Explore Hotel Emma

The hotel itself is worth wandering. There are so many special touches throughout. We spent a lot of time just exploring the hotel and grounds.

Play in The Pearl

The Pearl District is right at Hotel Emma’s doorstep and has so many things to do. Restaurants, entertainment venues and boutique shopping is all within walking distance. I was so glad we didn’t plan to do a lot of the typical San Antonio tourist sites on this trip. We spent the entire weekend in The Pearl and never ran out of things to do.

Dining at Hotel Emma

Larder

Larder is part coffee shop, part gourmet market, and part grab-and-go deli. Think Parisian café meets South Texas grocer. You’ll find everything from house-made pastries and pressed sandwiches to local wines, craft beers, and small-batch pantry staples.

They also carry a curated selection of gifts, from Hotel Emma merchandise to Smithey cast iron pieces.

Supper

Supper is Hotel Emma’s signature restaurant where they blend South Texas flavors with a French bistro vibe. The atmosphere is upscale but laid-back, and the menu is all about fresh, seasonal ingredients.

We had brunch there and sat outside overlooking the River Walk. I definitely recommended if you get lucky and have a cool morning like we did. I had the crab eggs benedict (perfection), and Jason went with the classic breakfast. Both were fantastic.

Sternewirth Tavern & Club Room

Sternewirth, the bar inside Hotel Emma, is hands-down one of the coolest hotel bars I’ve ever seen. And, I’m not alone. We met more locals than tourists hanging out in Sternewirth.

Located in the old Pearl Brewery’s fermentation hall, It feels like a cross between a speakeasy and an old-world library. (The vibe reminded me of Sire, the lobby bar at La Cantera Resort -also in San Antonio- but on a massive scale.)

The décor is incredible. The centerpiece is a massive chandelier made of an original brewery bottle labeler that hangs from the 25-foot vaulted ceiling. The antique furniture collected from European flea markets, worn leather club chairs, and moody lighting make the cavernous space feel intimate.

One of the coolest touches? The original fermentation tanks have been transformed into private seating nooks.

The bartenders know their craft and they offer several specials. I did try the Bread and Butter Old Fashioned. While it wasn’t for me, I loved that they tried such unique flavors. Don’t skip the signature “Three Emmas” cocktail. It’s a clever nod to the hotel’s wild backstory and absolutely worth a try.

The Kentucky Derby party at Sternewirth was easily one of the highlights of our weekend. The bar was packed with a mix of locals and guests from a wedding happening in the Elephant Cellar just down the hall. But as hotel guests, we had access to the mezzanine above, which felt like our own private room. We were able to be right in the middle of the action, without being in the crowd.

Is Hotel Emma Worth It?

Hotel Emma was a splurge, for sure. But, one we don’t regret. From interior design to service, it’s a perfect blend of historic preservation and modern luxury. For couples looking to splurge on a romantic weekend or celebrate a special occasion, Hotel Emma delivers a one-of-a-kind experience. It’s not just worth it. Hotel Emma is a top 10 for us.

One of the biggest reasons? The Service! A knock on the door interrupted our last night. When I opened the door, a room service attendant greeted me with the Anniversary Package that I had considered buying before our trip. Our server from Sternewirth had it sent to our room with a handwritten note wishing us a happy anniversary. Its details like that which set Hotel Emma apart!
