We’ve put together our list of the best southern vacation spots for couples. Whether you dream of a romantic escape in a charming small town, an outdoor adventure, or an indulgent city break, the Southern United States offers some of the most romantic getaways.
I’ve put together a list of our favorite Southern vacation spots for couples that we return to year after year. I’ve also thrown in a couple of places that are high on our list to try.

1. Charleston, South Carolina
While these are not in any particular order, I am kicking off our list with my favorite Southern city for a romantic getaway. We visit the Holy City at least once a year and never get tired of exploring its historic charm.
You can spend a relaxing weekend strolling along the riverfront, browsing antique shops, and lounging by the rooftop pool of your hotel.
Or, pack your day exploring historical sites and hidden gems, finishing with cocktails on one of Charleston’s many rooftop bars.
Our Charleston trips fall somewhere in the middle. Mostly, because this is one destination where we shape our days around the amazing food scene. We never miss Lewis BBQ, Boxcar Betty’s or The Tattooed Moose for casual lunches. Our favorite dinner spots are The Shellmore or any of Charlestons oyster bars.
Charleston Hotels for Couples
We usually stay downtown near the French Quarter so we can park our car for the weekend and walk to most everything. Charleston has some wonderful hotels downtown, but these are our personal favorites.
The Charleston Place
Our personal favorite! Calling itself “Charleston’s Living Room”, The Charleston Place is an elegant hotel in the heart of the historic district. We stayed here when it was under the Belmond name and again after becoming a Beemok property. Both stays were first class experiences. This is definitely a pricier option but with gorgeous rooms, a great spa, and impeccable service its totally worth the splurge.
The Spectator Hotel
If Gatsby-like glam with a personal butler is more your style, check into The Spectator Hotel. Yes, you read that right. Each of the hotel’s 41 rooms comes with its own private butler to handle everything from making dinner reservations to pressing your dress while you get ready. After dinner, head to the hotel’s lounge to sip on prohibition era cocktail. Oh, did I mention the complimentary breakfast in bed delivered to your room each morning? 😉

There are so many things to do in Charleston , the hardest decision will be what to do now and what to save for your next trip!

Charleston is a fabulous romantic getaway destination year round. Summers are perfect for lounging on one of the beaches close to Charleston. Spring and fall have more moderate weather and fewer crowds, making the shoulder seasons our favorite time to visit.

2. Savannah, Georgia
Savannah, Georgia is Charleston’s cousin to the south. You’ll often see debates raging over which of these Southern cities you should visit. We say both!
With its historic gardens, bustling river walk restaurants and romantic hotels Savannah deserves a place on the list of best Southern vacation spots for couples. We love wandering the cobblestone streets and perusing the antique shops for unique finds.

Spring is the time to go for azaleas in bloom and pleasant weather. Although, you may want to avoid St. Patricks Day weekend, unless you are looking for a party atmosphere. The entire city celebrates and even the Savannah River is dyed green! Summer is hot and crowds are higher, so we usually skip Savannah from June to August.
3. Asheville, North Carolina
Located in the Blue Ridge Mountains, Asheville is a dream destination for outdoor enthusiasts, luxury travelers, and foodies. This city has an artistic vibe with galleries and working studios you can visit. This makes Asheville one of the best Southern vacation spots for couples.

Asheville truly is an ideal destination year round. Spring is beautiful when the flowers are in bloom. Summers aren’t too hot thanks to its mountain location. Visit in the Fall for stunning foliage and crisp mountain air. We also love Asheville at Christmas when the Biltmore Estate is decorated for the holidays and the Omni Grove Park Inn hosts the annual gingerbread house competition.
4. Amelia Island, Florida
Amelia Island has it all! Pristine beaches, an adorable downtown, world class restaurants, and luxurious accommodations make it one of the most romantic destinations along the Atlantic Ocean. The feel is relaxed and casual with lowcountry vibe.

You can’t beat summers on Amelia Island with warm sun and ocean breezes. Don’t get me wrong, it’s hot and downtown Fernandina Beach will be crowded. But, that comes with being in southern beach town in the summer. Spring and fall temps are much more mild and the crowds thin out.
5. San Antonio, Texas
With its rich history, lively River Walk, and luxurious hotels, San Antonio is a great spot for a romantic city break. Stay in the downtown Riverwalk area or venture to our favorite spot – Museum Reach and stay in The Pearl District. San Antonio is easily one of the best southern vacation spots for couples.

We’ve been to San Antonio in both spring and summer. Summer is hot. Like, really hot. But, flight and hotel prices can be a little lower.
Spring was my favorite time to visit. The weather was perfect and we were able to experience Festiva San Antonio, a citywide celebration filled with parades, food, and cultural events.
6. Ocean Springs, Mississippi
Located on the Mississippi Gulf Coast, Ocean Springs is a hidden gem that combines beautiful beaches, a thriving arts scene, and mouthwatering coastal cuisine. Self described as “a drinking town with an art problem” Ocean Springs is a quaint small town that repeatedly lands on lists of best places to visit. (Just ask Southern Living)

Summer is peak beach weather with high temps and higher humidity. Winters are mild with temps in the 60s and 70s, plus you can’t beat the vibe around Mardi Gras.
Spring and fall offer the most comfortable weather and plenty of festivals from the Peter Anderson Arts & Crafts Festival to the wildly popular Cruisin’ the Coast vintage car show.
7. Chattanooga, Tennessee
We visit Chattanooga at least once a year for its breathtaking scenic drives, delicious restaurants, and thriving arts scene. This historic city has the perfect blend of romantic accommodations and outdoor adventures for a great weekend getaway.

16. White Sulphur Springs, West Virginia
This is one of those places that people look at me sideways when I recommend they visit. And, I get it. White Sulphur Springs is in the middle of West Virginia and is less than 2 square miles with a population of around 2200 people. Its small, but trust me.
White Sulphur Springs has actually been a vacation destination for over 200 years. The South’s wealthiest families started coming in the 1700s for the sulphur-rich mineral springs the believed could cure everything from eczema to rheumatism and nervous disorders.
Today, you can still “take the waters” in one of The Greenbrier Resorts luxurious spa treatments. Or head outside to explore the Greenbrier Valley and the Allegheny Mountains. You’ll find miles of trails to hike, rivers to fish, and championship golf courses to play. Plus tennis, falconry, delicious restaurants, and shopping.
White Sulphur Springs is one of the best Southern vacation spots for couples because it is so removed from everyday life. Our stay at The Greenbrier gave us a weekend to reconnect and relax together.

If you’ve read my ultimate guide to The Greenbrier resort, you already know I’m a huge fan of this historic hotel. The Greenbrier is a destination in itself with 12 restaurants and more than enough things to do on property that you’ll never get bored. Whether you are into golf, tennis, white water rafting, or even falconry The Greenbrier delivers. The interior decor is an explosion of color and each room is decorated individually so no two are the same.
The Schoolhouse Hotel
Maybe its my career as a teacher, but this 100+ year old school building turned hotel is on my hotel bucket list just for the cool factor. The hotel’s 30 rooms give a nod to its former life as White Sulphur Springs School with names like “Sociology” and “Home Economics”. The hotel is one of the first boutique hotels in the country to exceed ADA compliance standards in all rooms and public spaces.
