Question 1

How many days do you need for a New England fall road trip?

Accepted Answer

We did this route in seven days, and honestly, my ideal would be ten. Seven is absolutely doable and you'll see a lot, but within almost every town we stopped in, there were things we didn't have time for. With ten days you could add a couple more towns, slow down at the places you love, and still build in a little rest, which matters more than you might think on a trip that covers this much ground. If seven is what you've got, you'll have a wonderful trip. If you can swing ten, take it.

Question 2

When is the best time to see fall foliage in New England?

Accepted Answer

Peak color usually lands in early to mid-October, but it varies year to year and moves from north to south, so the mountains of Vermont and New Hampshire turn before the Maine coast.

We traveled the last week of September expecting early color and hit an explosion of it, because Vermont was in a drought that turned the leaves early. The lesson: watch a live foliage map in the weeks before you go rather than locking in dates too far out. Going slightly before peak also means thinner crowds, which we loved.

Question 3

Where should you start a New England fall road trip?

Accepted Answer

We started in Boston, and it's the natural launch point, you fly into Logan, pick up a rental car, and you're on the road in under an hour. Boston also gives you the most flexibility for flights and rental options. If you're driving in from New York, Connecticut, or elsewhere in the Northeast, you can join the loop at whatever point is closest and reorder the days to suit.

Question 4

Is a New England fall road trip doable with limited mobility?

Accepted Answer

Yes, with some planning. We traveled with my dad, who uses a mobility scooter, and found plenty he could enjoy: paved coastal paths like the Marginal Way in Ogunquit, lighthouse views you can take in right from the car, and open, walkable parks like Fort Williams.

Some stops weren't accessible (Hammond Castle, the breakwaters, the USS Albacore), and I've flagged those throughout so you can plan around them. Two tips that helped us a lot: book ADA rooms ahead, and remember that New Hampshire, Maine, and Vermont all offer free metered parking with a disability placard.

Question 5

What should you pack for a New England fall road trip?

Accepted Answer

Layers are everything. Fall in New England swings from crisp mornings to mild afternoons to cold coastal evenings, sometimes in the same day, so think a base layer, a warm mid-layer, and a windproof or rain jacket.

Comfortable walking shoes are a must (these towns are made for wandering), and don't forget a reusable water bottle, a portable charger for all the photos you'll take, and cash for the small cash-only parking lots you'll hit along the way. My full breakdown is in the What to Pack section.

Question 6

Can you add Acadia or Bar Harbor to this trip?

Accepted Answer

You can, but I wouldn't try to bolt it onto this exact route. Acadia sits far up the Maine coast, and the five-day "Acadia plus the mountains" itineraries you'll find online only make it work by cutting out Portland, Portsmouth, Cape Ann, and most of the stops that make this particular trip special, then spending a full day just driving across the state.

My honest advice: pick a lane. If Acadia is your priority, build a coastal trip around it, Boston up through Maine to Bar Harbor, and save the mountains for another time. If the foliage and the mountains are the dream, do this loop and save Acadia for a future trip. Trying to do everything in one week means you rush the parts you came for.

Question 7

Can you do this New England fall road trip in 3 or 5 days?

Accepted Answer

Not this whole route, at least not without rushing it. The coastal leg alone (Cape Ann up to Portland) took us three full days, and it never felt slow.

If you only have a few days, my honest advice is to pick one half rather than cram in both. Do the coast (Boston, Cape Ann, and coastal Maine) or the mountains (the White Mountains and Vermont), and save the other for next time. You'll have a far better trip seeing half of it well than all of it in a blur.
