How to Make Authentic Ti Punch from Martinique

Before our first visit to Martinique, we had never heard of Ti Punch. But, once on the French Caribbean island, it didn’t take long to fall in love with this delicious rhum aperitif. We brought home several bottles of Martinique rhum and have enjoyed recreating the cocktail.

Creole for “little punch”, Ti Punch is the national drink of Martinique and is served just about everywhere. And, I mean everywhere. You’ll find it on every menu, in the markets, at street vendors, on sightseeing tours, and possibly even waiting for you at your hotel when you arrive.

With only three ingredients, the rhum aperitif captures the flavor of the island, literally. More on that later.

What is in Authentic Ti Punch?

The beauty of authentic Ti Punch is in its simplicity. Only three ingredients.

  • Rhum Agricole
  • Sugar Cane Syrup
  • Fresh Lime

That’s it. The amount of each ingredient can be adjusted to taste. But, nothing else is added. Don’t mess with a good thing.

What is the Difference Between Rum and Rhum Agricole?

Not just any rhum can be used in authentic Ti Punch. This tasty cocktail requires rhum agricole. But, what exactly is the difference?

Traditional rums are made with the molasses left over after the sugar refining process. Distilleries then craft the individual flavors of their rums through the production process.

Rhum Agricole has a distinct grassy flavor that comes from the land.

The same way that a wine’s flavor is determined by the soil in which the grapes are grown, the flavor of rhum agricole is unique to the sugarcane grown on Martinique.

That’s because rhum agricole is made from pressing fresh, locally grown sugarcane. The cane must be processed within 24 hours of harvest, delivering the grassy flavors of the soil.

Once we tried rhum agricole, we haven’t gone back to other rums. Its like going from freshly squeezed lemonade back to concentrate. The flavor is just not the same.

While the ingredients in Ti Punch are always the same, the combination can be completely personal.

Many Martiniquan restaurants, like Le Moulin a Cannes (pictured) located in a former mill at Depaz Distillery serve the ingredients separately so you can mix yours to taste.

No matter how you mix your Ti Punch, purists agree that you never use ice.
