We took a day trip from Boston up Cape Ann to Rockport and immediately fell in love with this quaint New England fishing village. We loved it so much that we made it a stop on our New England road trip later the same year.

Because once you’ve had fresh lobster at Roy Moore Lobster Co, you have to go back when you are within 100 miles!

So, what makes Rockport MA so special? First of all, this charming little town looks like it’s straight out of a movie. And, it kind of is. Rockport was the filming location for movies like The Proposal, CODA, and Mermaids.

It’s small, walkable, and full of character, with a working harbor, local art galleries, and seafood that tastes like it came straight off the boat (because it did).

Whether you’re here for a romantic weekend or a low-key beach escape, figuring out where to stay in Rockport is part of the fun.

Rockport, Massachusetts is the perfect location for a romantic weekend getaway, a peaceful solo trip, or a foodie weekend with your best girlfriends.

We were so pleasantly surprised at the artistic culture in Rockport. We knew the town had a quaint working harbor and delicious seafood. But, were shocked to find that Rockport has over 30 art galleries, a renowned art museum, and tons of quaint shops to explore.

For a romantic night out, grab dinner atFleur Cuisine Harborside and then catch a show at the Shalin Liu Performance Center overlooking the water.

When picking where to stay in Rockport for this type of trip, I’d recommend one of the charming boutique hotels or Bed & Breakfasts in town.

Addison Choate | $$$ | This historic home turned boutique hotel is the ideal spot for a romantic getaway in Rockport. Located near downtown, you’re literally steps from the best restaurants and shops. Guests rave about Addison Choate, rating it highly on TripAdvisor and Google! The 7 individual rooms are each uniquely decorated but all carry a vintage, mid-century vibe. Each room features plush bedding, an ensuite bathroom, and plush robes. Children must be 12 years old and pets are not allowed.
Sally Webster Inn | $$ | Part of the Addison Choate family, this inn has a little more whimsy. The colonial exterior hides rooms that are colorful, creative, and full of personality. How fun is it that all the rooms are full of personality and named for famous women pirates? The Grace O’Malley is my personal favorite. If you like a mix of history and fun design, this one’s for you.
The Cove at Rockport | $$$ | If you like the idea of falling asleep to the sound of waves crashing on the beach, The Cove at Rockport is your spot. The location overlooking Front Beach means you can park once and walk to shops, restaurants, and the beach. The vibe leans modern over traditional with clean, bright decor.
Beech Tree B&B | $$$ | Guests rave about this beautiful Bed & Breakfast in a restored 1860s Greek Revival. A quiet little spot with a homey feel. The hosts are welcoming, the gardens are beautiful, and the breakfasts are the kind you’ll actually look forward to waking up for. Some rooms have ensuite bathrooms while others have a private, yet detached bath across the hallway. So, be sure to check when booking.

Oceanfront Rockport MA Hotels

Located at the tip of Cape Ann, you can’t talk about Rockport without mentioning the beaches and the stunning ocean views. There are 6 easily accessible beaches in town.

Front Beach: Right in the center of town, Front Beach is as convenient as it gets. It’s an easy walk from most inns and perfect for a quick swim or sunset stroll.
Back Beach: Back Beach is known for its calm water and scuba diving spots. It’s a little quieter, with more locals and fewer day-trippers.
Long Beach: One of the best stretches of sand around, Long Beach lives up to its name—it’s perfect for long walks and summer swims.
Cape Hedge Beach: A little rockier and more secluded, Cape Hedge Beach is great if you want peace and quiet. It’s less developed than the downtown beaches, and the scenery is beautiful in every direction.
Old Garden Beach: A small, scenic beach near the headlands, this one’s great for quick dips and watching the waves crash against the rocks.
Pebble Beach: Lined with smooth stones and offers stunning views of Thacher Island’s twin lighthouses. It’s not ideal for swimming, but it’s a photographer’s dream.

Ok, so I say the beaches are easily accessible. But the truth is, parking at the Rockport beaches can be very tricky. Many parking lots are for residents only and public lots are few and far between.

So, if spending time on the beach is important to you when choosing where to stay in Rockport, you’re going to want to choose a hotel close to the beach. Plus you’ll get to enjoy those amazing views and fall asleep to the sound of crashing waves.

Oceanfront Hotels in Rockport MA

Emerson Inn by the Sea | $$$ | This one’s a Rockport classic. In fact, its the oldest seaside inn north of Boston. Located near Halibut Point, it’s a little removed from the bustle of downtown.

So it’s perfect if you like a slower pace and a little history mixed in with your ocean views. This historic building doesn’t have an elevator, but does have accessible rooms on the first floor. Be sure to request one if needed.
Yankee Clipper Inn | $$$ | This property is made up of two historic buildings. The 1920s art-deco Yankee Clipper Inn has hosted everyone from JFK to Bette Davis. The Bulfinch Inn was built as a private home in 1840 by Charles Bulfinch, who also happened to be the architect of Boston’s Faneuil Hall. in

The vibe in both guest houses is old-school but comfortable, and the views are unreal. While the coast here is more rocky than sandy beach, the inn has plenty of manicured lawn to stretch out and enjoy the sunshine. There’s even a saltwater pool overlooking the ocean if you’re visiting in warmer months.
Captain’s Bounty on the Beach | $$ | This one’s all about location! Every single room has a balcony facing Front Beach. You can walk to dinner, hear the waves at night, and roll out of bed and onto the sand in the morning.

Several rooms have kitchenettes, making it perfect for longer stays. Simple, comfortable, hard to beat.
Eden Pines Inn | $$$ | A little outside of downtown, Eden Pines is quiet and private, with views of Thacher Island’s twin lighthouses. Grab a Adirondack chair on the soft grass overlooking the water or a spot by the cozy fire inside.

As a bonus, you can leave your windows open and fall asleep to the sound of the surf. Continental breakfast is provided each morning.

Quiet Retreats & Longer Stays in Rockport MA

We had such a great time during the few days we’ve spent in Rockport. But I don’t feel like either of our two trips was enough to get the full Rockport experience. I’d definitely go back for a week or more.

I’d say Rockport is less of a “check the box” destination and more of a “stay a while and get to know the locals” kind of place.

With Gloucester, Essex, and Manchester-by-the-Sea just minutes away, you can fill your days with beaches, whale-watching tours, and endless seafood spots.

If you have a week or so, take a quick day trip to explore the lighthouses in Portland Maine.

While any of the spots on our list would be great for extended stays, these guest houses are smaller, more personal, and family owned.

These are more cozy places to stay in Rockport with amenities such as coffee makers, kitchenettes, and free wifi. They’re great for longer stays, small groups, or anyone who wants that home-away-from-home feel.

The Seaward | $$$ | This seaside cottage is tucked just far enough from downtown to feel private but close enough that you can still head in for dinner. The style is much more rustic, but also have an authenticity to them that’s cozy. It has a kitchenette, comfy living space, and a lived-in feel that makes it feel like you are staying with a friend.
Mooring Stone Guest House | $$$ | When you want to be on the water, you can’t get any closer than the Mooring Stone Guest House. Located in the Rockport harbor, you’ll have views of the famous Motif #1. You get water views, quiet surroundings, and a relaxed atmosphere that feels like you’re staying with friends—if your friends happened to own a house by the sea.

Rockport is very family friendly and offers lots of things to do for visitors of all ages. Plus, there are plenty of free things to do here, no matter what size group you are traveling with.

Walk Bearskin Neck – The main drag of downtown Rockport is filled with local shops, galleries, and ocean views. You could spend hours wandering and never get bored.
See Motif #1 – This little red fishing shack is one of the most photographed buildings in New England. Grab your own shot and enjoy the harbor views while you’re there.
Relax at Front Beach – It’s free to walk, swim, or sit in the sand (parking’s the only cost). Perfect for a low-key beach day.
Hike Halibut Point State Park – The coastal trails and rocky overlooks are gorgeous, especially at sunset. The walk is free; parking is a few dollars if you drive in.
Visit the Rockport Art Association & Museum – Admission is free, and it’s a great way to see local art and learn about the town’s creative roots.
Stroll The Headlands – A short walk from downtown leads to one of the best panoramic views of the harbor. Bring coffee or snacks and enjoy the sea breeze.

Bearskin Neck Motor Lodge | $$ | This family owned lodge sits right in the heart of Bearskin Neck and has been serving Rockport visitors since 1968. Though it has changed ownership a few times, it has always been run with a personal touch. The newest owners are Massachusetts natives who love sharing their love of Rockport with their guests. The rooms are clean and comfortable, but the real draw is the view—grab a chair on the shared deck and watch the harbor light up at sunset. Plus, you are literally steps from downtown. Onsite parking is available, which is invaluable in the peak summer season!
Rockport Inn & Suites | $$ | A solid pick if you’re traveling with kids or just want more amenities. This spot is on Main Street, but slightly outside of town. Located on 5 acres, there’s plenty of room for children (or pets) to get out travel energy. Plus, you’ll find Rockport’s only indoor pool. Free continental breakfast is available daily. My favorite spot is the huge patio firepit that’s perfect for relaxing with a glass of wine after a full day of sightseeing.

Tips for Booking in Rockport

Plan early. Rockport fills up fast in summer and during leaf-peeping season, so book a few months out if you can.
Parking is limited. Especially downtown. Double-check before you go.
Don’t skip spring or fall. Shoulder season is a great time to visit—cooler temps, fewer crowds, and better rates.
