Best Chicago Architecture Boat Tour: Which One to Book in 2026
The best views of Chicago are from the river, not a rooftop bar. We booked a Chicago architecture boat tour our first evening in town, and it turned out to be one of our favorite things we have done anywhere.

Choosing a Chicago Architecture Boat Tour
There are several companies that run Chicago architecture boat tours. We chose to book with Wendella and had a fantastic experience. Our guide was an art teacher during the school year and a tour guide during the summer. She was incredibly knowledgeable about the city’s architecture and kept us entertained with fascinating stories throughout the tour.
We’ve researched 7 other tour companies to help you pick the best Chicago river boat architecture tour for you. While most sail the three branches of the Chicago River with expert guides delivering live narration, each tour offers its own unique experience.
A couple tour companies offer options that include Lake Michigan. Some offer more luxury. And, others are more family and dog friendly. One even has a speedboat experience for visitors looking for a more exciting architecture cruise.
No matter which Chicago river boat architecture tour you choose, we recommend sitting on one of the upper decks for the best views.

Chicago Architecture Boat Tour vs Walking Tour?
There are plenty of companies offering Architecture Walking Tours. But after our boat tour, I really think the water is the best way to see Chicago’s architectural history.
The Chicago River runs through the heart of the city and provides the best view of these architectural landmarks since most are designed to face the river. From the water, you can see details you just can’t see at street level.
Plus, you can tour while relaxing with a breeze in your hair and a cocktail in your hand on a Chicago River Boat Architecture Tour. In a single 90-minute tour, you’ll cruise past 50+ architectural designs from historic warehouses to modern glass towers.
What Chicago Landmarks Will You See on a Boat Tour?
The 90 minute tours include 50+ significant buildings and other examples of Chicago’s architecture. These are only a few examples of what your tour guide will cover on a Chicago Architecture BoatTour.
- Centennial Fountain
- Chicago Riverwalk
- Civic Opera Building
- Leo Burnett Building
- Merchandise Mart
- NBC Tower
- Soldier Field
- Site of Mrs O’Leary’s Barn
- Tribune Tower
- Trump Tower
- Willis Tower (formerly Sears Tower)
- Wrigley Building

PRO TIP: Some tour boats are accessible, but others are not. Small marine craft are not required to meet ADA specifications. However, most tour companies are working to make their vessels accessible.
We recommend checking the operators website before booking if you have questions about accessibility. Also, there are no elevators down to the Riverwalk so read each company’s website carefully if you need wheelchair access.

1. The Original Chicago Architecture Boat Tour: My Top Pick!
Wendella 90 Minute Architecture Tour
Started in 1935, Wendella’s is a family owned company and Chicago’s original river boat tour. This one was our choice and we can personally recommend it. With over 10,000 reviews, we aren’t the only ones who love this river tour.
Our guide combined architectural commentary with local historical storytelling. It was clear that she was not only very knowledgeable about Chicago, but that she loved her city as well. They offer 45 minute tours, but we definitely recommend the 90 minute cruise. Wendella offers a military discount Monday – Thursday.

2. Best Chicago Boat Tour for Architecture Depth
Chicago Architecture Center River Cruise
Named the #1 Boat Tour in North America by USA Today’s 10 Best Readers’ Choice Awards two years running, with additional nods from Newsweek and it earns a TripAdvisor Travelers’ Choice award. The CAC partners with Chicago’s First Lady Cruises for the perfect combination of luxury vessels and expert guides.
This 90-minute tour focuses exclusively on architecture and design history and is considered the best pick for anyone looking for in-depth architectural knowledge. Certified volunteer docents from the Chicago Architecture Center complete almost 100 hours of training to provide you with detailed explanations of 50+ buildings’ architectural styles, historical significance, and design innovations.

3. Best Chicago Architecture Boat Tour for History Buffs
This unique tour allows to you to really experience a piece of Chicago’s history aboard a retired 1937 Fireboat. The boat itself is part of the experience, featuring original firefighting equipment and historical artifacts.
Tours include both river and lake portions, with guides splitting time between architectural commentary and the boat’s firefighting history. Going through the Chicago locks can add up to 30 minutes to the 90 minute tour schedule, so plan for at least 2 hours.
Note: The tour departs from Dock H behind the Columbia Yacht Club at DuSable harbor.

4. Best Chicago Architecture Boat Tour for Seeing River + Lake
Chicago Sightseeing River and Lake Cruise
Mercury’s tour runs 90 minutes and includes the Chicago River and Lake Michigan. The boat will travel through the Chicago locks, giving you the chance to experience the boat rising to meet the lake and lowering to the river’s level.
On summer weekends, Mercury offers a Canine Cruise so you can bring your pup with you on your tour.

5. Best Chicago Architecture Boat Tour for Flexible Departure & Navy Pier
Chicago Shoreline Architecture River Cruise
Shoreline ran its 85th season during 2026, making it one of the more established Chicago river boat architecture tour operators. They offer several tour options as well as a choice of departure points.
The Architecture Tour is 75 minutes and sails the three branches of the Chicago River. A guide delivers live narration throughout the tour, covering 40+ spots. You can choose the Michigan Avenue or Navy Pier departure point. Note that the Navy Pier location has better wheelchair access.
The Skyline Lake Tour departs from Navy Pier and tours the coastline of Lake Michigan. A pre-recorded narration covers the history of Chicago’s famous skyline. This tour runs 45 minutes.

6. Best Chicago Architecture Boat Tour for Actual Sailing Experience
Tall Ship Windy: Chicago Skyline Sail
Distinctly different from other options, this boat soars to 148′ with full sails that give pirate vibes. Tall Ship Windy boards at Navy Pier and exclusively sails Lake Michigan. It does not go into the Chicago River.
The focus is more on maritime history and general city views rather than close-up architecture viewing. The sailing experience itself is the main attraction, with city information secondary. Tours run 75 minutes.
This is the only cruise with themed cruises daily. Enjoy Pirates and Maritime Stories, Architectural and Skyline Tours, and Sunset or Skyline Sails. Arrive 30 – 45 minutes before departure time for a safety briefing.

7. Best Chicago Architecture Boat Tour for Quiet, Smaller Cruise
Chicago Line Architectural River Cruise
Chicago Line Cruises started the river boat architectural tour concept in 1985 and has been serving the Windy City ever since.
Located in the hidden Ogden Slip behind Pinstripes Café, this is the only tour company not located on the Riverwalk. The boats have covered areas, however there are no enclosed spaces. So, you are more open to the elements. Definitely bring a sweater.

Thrill seekers, this is the cruise for you. The ride is 75 minutes and is the only cruise that tours Lake Michigan (complete with a speedboat ride) and goes through the locks to the Chicago River.
The focus on the Seadog is more on fun than architectural history (although its still very informative) but you are guaranteed to have a good time. This is the Chicago architecture boat tour with a BYOB policy so you won’t be paying for a cash bar.

FAQs About the Chicago Architecture Boat Tour
How long is a Chicago architecture boat tour?
Most run 75 to 90 minutes. The 90-minute river cruise is the standard and the one I recommend, since it covers the most buildings and all three branches of the river. If you are short on time, Wendella and Shoreline both offer a 45-minute version from Michigan Avenue. The Fireboat and the lake tours can run closer to two hours once you factor in the locks.
Do I need to book a Chicago architecture boat tour in advance?
Yes. Book ahead. We flew in the morning of our tour and reserved our spot in advance so we would have it locked in, and that turned out to be the right call. Several tours sold out, and the people trying to walk up could not get on. Booking ahead gets you the time, the company, and the boat you actually want instead of whatever has a seat left.
Are there any discounts on Chicago architecture boat tours?
A few worth knowing about. Several operators, including Wendella and the Chicago Fireboat, offer military and first responder discounts, so bring your ID. If you are seeing other sights in the city, the Shoreline Architecture Tour is included on the Chicago CityPASS, which bundles it with other top attractions for one price. And early-season (April to May) and late-season (September to October) cruises often run cheaper than peak summer.
What is the best time of day to take an architecture tour?
Early morning tours have thinner crowds and softer light, which is the move if you want photos without a packed top deck. Late afternoon and sunset cruises give you golden hour on the glass towers, which is hard to beat.
Several companies run evening and sunset sails, and Tall Ship Windy is the one to book if a sunset specifically is what you are after.
Which architecture tours leave from Navy Pier?
Shoreline, Tall Ship Windy, and the Seadog all depart from Navy Pier. Shoreline lets you choose between Navy Pier and Michigan Avenue, and the Navy Pier dock has the better wheelchair access of the two. If you want to spend time at the Pier before or after, these are your picks.
Is the boat tour better than a walking tour?
The walking tours are good, and if you would rather stay on land and go at your own pace, they work. But most of these buildings were designed to face the river, so the water gives you angles and details you simply cannot see from the sidewalk. After doing it by boat, that is the version I recommend.
Is the Chicago Architecture Center cruise different from the others?
It is, and people get tripped up by the name. The Chicago Architecture Center, formerly the Chicago Architecture Foundation and sometimes searched as the architecture institute or society, partners with First Lady Cruises for the most architecture-focused tour on the river. Its docents go through close to 100 hours of training, so this is the pick if you want the deepest dive into the buildings rather than a more general sightseeing cruise.
Are the tours dog-friendly and kid-friendly?
Both. Kids are welcome on every tour, and several have reduced child pricing.
For dogs, the Chicago Fireboat, Shoreline, and the Seadog all allow leashed pups aboard, and Mercury runs a dedicated Canine Cruise on summer weekends. Check the specific tour before you book to be sure your date allows it.
